Walking Through a Memory
Acrylic and charcoal collected from bush fires in the Blue Mountains on canvas, and cardboard with dichroic film
Walking through a memory is a mixed media collection of work exploring the direct experience and its influence over our consciousness and experience of a place. It transforms the psychology of phenomenology to present an experience of being in the Australian landscape. A place that is old and full of memory.
The exhibition deconstructs the formal representations of a landscape by focusing on the details, movements, and feelings becoming a play between perspective, light, textures and forms. Becoming a representation of my relationship with the Blue Mountains; emotionally, physically and spiritually.
It is communicated through paintings of charcoal fragments and acrylic paints, and a patterned light that filters across the floor. It demonstrates the influence that natural forms have over our bodies, allowing an awareness of the sensations that arise in a given place. These visual signs evoke deep memories and connections with the physical environment that humans inhabit. These strengthen our understanding of the inherent value these places have to enliven our own sense of liveliness, as well as our mental and physical well-being.
